They have settled for second best, and as W. Somerset Maugham
astutely noted, "It's a funny thing about life; if you refuse
to accept anything but the best you very often get it."
Perhaps we need to fall back on the immortal wisdom of Zorba
the Greek, who summarized his radically joyful philosophy of
life in declaring, "A man needs a little madness, or else
he never dares cut the rope and be free."
Perhaps it's time for a little more madness in your life.........not
destructive madness, but the kind of outrageousness that demonstrates
that you cannot be predicted. Predictability in a human being
is akin to death. Remember the plight of beloved dramatic character
Shirley Valentine, a London housewife withering from boredom
and routine. Shirley explained, "I always said I would leave
when the kids grew up, but when they grew up, there was nowhere
to go."
There is somewhere to go now, and you deserve to be there. The
"Zorba Shift" may or may not require you to make external
life changes. What we are talking about is an inner acceptance
of your right to dance. It's your life, and if you don't live
it, no one else will live it for you. Cut the rope and be free.
