Do you believe in angels? I always did, at least in theory. After all, angels are mentioned over 300 times in Scripture; they seem to be busy and involved in the lives of everyone from Tobit to the Blessed Virgin. But truly meaningful creatures? In this day and age? As a journalist, I was especially skeptical.
But that was before a special December night in 1983, when my son Tim and his room-mate were driving from Connecticut to Chicago to spend Christmas with us. Their journey was complicated by record-low temperatures, minus 30 degrees by one a.m., when they got to Indiana. There, the car stalled, miles from anywhere, on a road bordered by cornfields. There were no lights in the distance, no place to run. Slowly, they began to freeze to death.
As this was happening, I was home praying for Tim. "God, please send someone," I asked, confident that, even on Christmas Eve, my Heavenly Father wouldn't be too busy to help. And He wasn't. As Tim told the story later, the boys suddenly saw the headlights of a tow truck blazing behind them, although they hadn't seen it approach. The driver took them to a place of safety. But when they turned around to pay him, he had vanished. And there were no truck tracks in the snow.
I pondered this happening for a long time. Could the "someone" God sent have been an angel, maybe even Tim's guardian angel? Did heaven intercede today? I decided to find out.
And so, over the next few years, when giving a speech, teaching a class or just talking with friends, I would share Tim's miracle. Slowly other people shared back. And their stories were every bit as wonderful as Tim's. I collected them, and in the summer of 1992, Where Angels Walk; True Stories of Heavenly Visitors was published; by January, it had hopped upon several national best-seller lists, where it still sits. Last fall, I released its sequel, Where Miracles Happen, as well as a book about children's angelic experiences, entitled An Angel to Watch Over Me.
It's been an awesome journey for me. But perhaps the best part is watching people become aware that God is with us, and truly cares. Occasionally He sends a spouse or special friend to bring us this reassurance. But there are other times, moments when a stranger appears at just the right time, and then is seen no more. Who is to say that this is not a heavenly messenger specifically sent to bring healing and hope?
